Abstract

Contemporary cinema has emerged as an influential medium for portraying women empowerment and addressing gender-related issues in society. Over the years, films have increasingly moved beyond traditional stereotypes of women as dependent or secondary characters and have started presenting strong, independent, and empowered female identities. Modern films often highlight women’s struggles, achievements, rights, leadership, education, career aspirations, and resistance against social discrimination and patriarchal norms. Through powerful storytelling and realistic representation, cinema contributes significantly to raising awareness about gender equality and women’s empowerment. the depiction of women empowerment in contemporary films and analyzes how modern cinema reflects changing social attitudes toward women. The representation of female characters in various roles such as professionals, leaders, athletes, activists, and independent decision-makers. It also discusses how films address important issues including gender discrimination, domestic violence, sexual harassment, unequal opportunities, and women’s rights. Special emphasis is placed on Indian contemporary cinema and the growing number of women-centric films in Bollywood and regional film industries. how films such as Queen, Pink, Dangal, Thappad, and Gangubai Kathiawadi have challenged traditional gender stereotypes and encouraged social discussions on women’s freedom, dignity, and equality.
